Where can the second sink go?

Short answer: lots of places. Here are the five usual spots, and what each one means for the plumbing.

Existing sink New sink
Kitchen plan with the existing sink on the back wall and the new sink in the island.

On the island

The crowd favorite. The island turns into its own little station.

How the pipes get there
Up through the floor under the island. With a basement or crawl space below, it’s easy. On a slab, we’ll talk through the options before you commit to anything.
Works well when
The island has a spot that isn’t the cooktop, with some cabinet room underneath.
Kitchen plan with both sinks on the same wall, the new one further down the counter.DW

Down the same wall

The new sink sits on the same run of counter as your first one, a few feet down.

How the pipes get there
Usually the easiest of the bunch, since the drain and water lines are already right there.
Works well when
You’ve got a long stretch of counter with a base cabinet under it.
Kitchen plan with the existing sink on the back wall and the new sink in a peninsula that juts into the room.

On the peninsula

Same idea as the island, on the counter that sticks out from the wall.

How the pipes get there
Since it’s attached to a wall, the lines usually have a shorter trip than they would to an island.
Works well when
There’s no island, or the island is already spoken for.
Kitchen plan where a small prep sink in the island is cut larger into a full-size second sink.

Make a small sink bigger

Got a little prep or bar sink that’s too small to be useful? We can cut the opening bigger for a full-size bowl.

How the pipes get there
They’re already there. The drain might need an upgrade, but the hard part’s done.
Good to know
The new opening has to be bigger than the old one all the way around. We can take stone away, but we can’t put it back.
Galley kitchen plan with the existing sink on one wall and the new sink on the opposite wall.

Across the room

A whole second station on another wall, or even in the pantry.

How the pipes get there
Depends on the wall. Sometimes it’s simple, sometimes it’s a longer run. Photos of what’s under the kitchen tell us a lot.
Works well when
You want two separate work spots with room to move at both.
